Junk Food As Addictive As Cocaine?

From CNN.com:

Scientists have finally confirmed what the rest of us have suspected for years: Bacon, cheesecake, and other delicious yet fattening foods may be addictive.

A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found.

Doing drugs such as cocaine and eating too much junk food both gradually overload the so-called pleasure centers in the brain, according to Paul J. Kenny, Ph.D., an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute, in Jupiter, Florida. Eventually the pleasure centers “crash,” and achieving the same pleasure–or even just feeling normal–requires increasing amounts of the drug or food, says Kenny, the lead author of the study.

“People know intuitively that there’s more to [overeating] than just willpower,” he says. “There’s a system in the brain that’s been turned on or over-activated, and that’s driving [overeating] at some subconscious level.”

After being fairly athletic and in good shape, I got into ministry in my early twenties and became quite the fatty. That’s sad considering the fact that church leaders should serve as examples of people with a handle on self-discipline. Why is it that I gave gluttony a free pass?

I’ve since come to believe that overeating is a spiritual issue that matters to Jesus, and have worked on my weight for over a year through diet and exercise. Quite a bit has come off, but I still have a long way to go.

Honestly, it’s been tough. I struggle with self-discipline, but I’ve gotten (and am continuing to get) better.

Nowadays Airiel and I don’t buy much junk food when we grocery shop (she never bought any to begin with, but I sure did), but I still find myself lured toward that bag of chips or the occasional Dr. Pepper when I’m out and about in town or when I stop to get gas. In addition to that, California’s own In N’ Out Burger is right around the corner from me, and that’s the best fast food restaurant I’ve ever been to (and it’s right next door to a Krispy Kream – this is the Devil’s doin’, I tell ya!).

It makes sense that junk food is addictive … all the more reason to stay away from it …

… but those Funyuns are so good!

Bah, maybe I should join a recovery group. “Hi, I’m Wes, and I’m a Funyun addict.” :p

Second Openly Gay Bishop to be Confirmed in Episcopal Church

From Crosswalk.com:

Second Openly Gay Bishop to be Confirmed in Episcopal Church

A lesbian priest has been confirmed as an assistant bishop in Los Angeles, making her the Episcopal Church’s second openly gay bishop and potentially widening its breach with Anglicans overseas.

A majority of the more than 100 bishops and dioceses in the Episcopal Church ratified the December election of Bishop-elect Mary Douglas Glasspool, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori announced on Wednesday (March 17).

Glasspool, who was a diocesan administrator in Maryland prior to her election, will be consecrated a suffragan (assistant) bishop in Los Angeles on May 15.

“I am overjoyed — and relieved, and deeply grateful,” Glasspool said in an interview. “I see this as a positive response to the refreshing, renewing movement of God’s holy spirit, and I hold out great hope for the church and the world.”

Glasspool, 56, has been with her partner since 1988, and will become the second openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, after Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, who was elected in 2003.

Robinson called Glasspool’s confirmation “a great day for the church.”

“All the credit and glory for this exciting development goes to God, on whose behalf so many of us have been working,” Robinson said. “Suddenly, and gratefully, I don’t feel so alone.”

I’ve taken classes with several Episcopalians at Fuller.

Two I remember in particular – one who was opposed to the ordination of homosexual clergy, the other for it.

The one who was opposed knew the Scriptures well surrounding this issue, and couldn’t understand how any Episcopalian who’d read them could call something like this okay and give it their blessing.

The one who was for it didn’t believe the New Testament said anything about homosexuality … much less something calling it sinful. “After all,” they reasoned, “There are openly gay bishops!”

True story.

Missing the Tulsa Workshop … *sigh*

This year’s Tulsa Workshop will be the first one I’ve missed since becoming a Christian.

The workshop starts tomorrow – if you’re attending and hear a presentation that I simply must listen to, please drop me a line here so I’ll know which recordings to order. Don’t worry Tulsa Workshop organizers – I promise not to post them on the internet again (lol).

Thanks :)

Free Audio from the 2010 Sonshine State Experience

The 2010 Sonshine State Experience in Gainesville, FL was great! Seven campus ministries came together to enjoy food, fellowship, worship, late-night campfire singing, smores, and, of course, studying the Word at the Florida Bible Camp this year.

Thank you to Donny Dillon, the campus minister serving The University of Florida through Gators for Christ, for inviting me to participate in 2010 – it was a rich experience.

Buddy Bell, preaching minister for the Landmark Church of Christ in Montgomery, AL, did an outstanding job as usual. I’m going back to San Francisco with a pad chocked full of notes taken during his lessons. Coming from one who had his young faith shaped greatly by Buddy (back when I was a student), it was a privilege and an honor to get to teach alongside him over the weekend.

As promised, here are the lessons:

  1. Buddy Bell – “Staying on the Path” (41:30) PowerPoint

  2. Buddy Bell – “Avoiding Spiritual A.D.D.” (40:34) PowerPoint

  3. Buddy Bell – “A Little Help From My Friends” (45:12) PowerPoint

  4. Wes Woodell – “Staying Power: Christ-Centered Identity” (47:47) PowerPoint; Life Map Handout

  5. Wes Woodell – “How to Lose Your Faith: An Experiment in Evil” (41:49) PowerPoint; Class Outline

  6. Wes Woodell – “Staying Power: Seven Secrets of Fired Up Faith” (43:52) PowerPoint

Feel free to share these with anyone you believe would benefit from them.

Couple of pics from last week

Our college group during the Manny Pacquiao fight last week - we had a great time.

Our college group is awesome – can’t wait to see what we look like at this time next year.

Marc taking the opportunity his birthday party afforded to witness to his friends.

I told you about Marc’s birthday party in this post – check it out if you haven’t already. Great story I won’t soon forget.

Making this post from a couch in the living room of Lynn Stringfellow in Tampa, FL.

Heading up to Gainesville tomorrow to attend the Sonshine State Experience and looking forward to a great weekend. Will update afterward. :)
