Trudging through life day to day makes it easy to forget real reality sometimes.
Do you ever stop to think about how this life is only temporary?
No, I don’t mean for you to simply give this a passing thought – have you really meditated on it?
Think about it …
If you’re following Jesus then all life’s troubles, all sorrows, all feelings of desperation, all the abuse, injustice, and bad situations you’ve experienced – every single time you’ve been made fun of, every time you’ve experienced pain; whether physically, mentally, or emotionally – everything distasteful, ugly, and vile that’s ever been in your life and will ever be in your life – every hurt, hangup, or horrible happening – every single negative no matter how big or how small – all, and I mean, all these things are temporary.
They’re not even a drop in the bucket for a disciple of Jesus. They’re not even a blink, because we know they won’t last. We know they aren’t rooted in power, and understand their end is destruction.
We understand real reality, and the real reality is that our eternity is secure because of what Jesus has done.
That’s why the apostle Paul could be beaten up, torn down, thrown out, or cast in – yet continue on. That’s why the Twelve went to their deaths telling people about Jesus, while others gave up house and home for Him only to be tracked down like dogs by Roman soldiers. That’s why early disciples of Jesus could have their skin filleted off while praying blessings upon their torturers, and why so many died in Roman arenas.
Were they afraid? You bet they were, but despite their fear they stood up for their belief in Jesus as the Son of God.
They understood that pain is only temporary, and the only thing on this side of heaven that really matters is Jesus – not just for the person following Him, but for everyone.
Be encouraged! Your pain is temporary, but Jesus Christ is eternal!
Regardless of your circumstance, meditate on this and come to understand real reality.
That is the key to joy in this life!
Last Friday I spent the day with Clint Hill. Clint is the campus minister for the Arlington Heights Church of Christ in Corpus Christi, TX, and the director of the Corpus Christi chapter of Christians In Action (CIA) – the campus ministry serving Texas A & M Corpus Christi.
CIA Corpus is the latest CMU ministry plant. They’ve barely gotten started (Clint was hired two months ago), and have already seen six students give their lives to Christ.
Clint had organized a promotional event on campus that coincided with my visit there on Halloween day. The event included one of the CIA members – Darryl – dressing up as that creepy king character (from the Burger King commercials) and offering to have his picture taken with people. Prints were made on sight taking about five minutes to be processed. While students waited on their pictures to print, other CIA members handed them a free Bible and info on upcoming ministry events, and also took time to talk to them and get to know them a bit.
This was a great event! I’m very optimistic about what the future holds for CIA Corpus and the Arlington Heights Church.
Here’s a short YouTube vid:
And here are some pics:

We went from Arlington Heights to the campus ...

... set up our table full of free Bibles and picture printers ...

... and started meeting people.

Autographing Bibles
When “King James” wasn’t getting his picture taken with someone, he was autographing Bibles. That’s an A & M basketball player standing behind him if you couldn’t tell.

Nice bling

As the crowds grew larger, CIA members worked quickly to get pictures taken, printed, and handed back to students. The five minutes it took for the pictures to finish printing afforded a great opportunity for us to spend time building relationships with the people around us. Many students asked why were giving away free Bibles and pictures with King James, and we told them all about the CIA and why we exist.

Being Halloween, other interesting characters showed up.

I’ll do another write up on the CMU site when I have some more time later this week. I’d also like to include some stuff there on our other ministry plants.
Anyway, this event in Corpus was a lot of fun and a lot of new contacts were made.
Keep up the good work!
