Glenn Beck: “Churches that Preach Social Justice are Preaching Communism & Nazism”

Have you heard about this?

From this post on Politics Daily:

On his daily radio and television shows last week, Fox News personality Glenn Beck set out to convince his audience that “social justice,” the term many Christian churches use to describe their efforts to address poverty and human rights, is a “code word” for communism and Nazism. Beck urged Christians to discuss the term with their priests and to leave their churches if leaders would not reconsider their emphasis on social justice.

“I’m begging you, your right to religion and freedom to exercise religion and read all of the passages of the Bible as you want to read them and as your church wants to preach them . . . are going to come under the ropes in the next year. If it lasts that long it will be the next year. I beg you, look for the words ‘social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!”

Later, Beck held up cards, one with a hammer and sickle and other with a swastika. “Communists are on the left, and the Nazis are on the right. That’s what people say. But they both subscribe to one philosophy, and they flew one banner. . . . But on each banner, read the words, here in America: ‘social justice.’ They talked about economic justice, rights of the workers, redistribution of wealth, and surprisingly, democracy.”

Dear Mr. Beck – with all due respect, this was an incredibly idiotic thing to say, and even more so to actually believe.

Does Acts 2:42-47 look like Communism to you? If so, then I’m happy to be a Communist. Do all the Bible passages that allude to the early followers of Jesus’ work and concern with the poor wreak of Nazism to you? If so, then I’m happy to be a Nazi.

Do you realize that “social justice” is defined differently depending on who you talk to? That the term “economic justice” means different things to different people, viewpoints varying widely from church to church and member to member?

Your comments were irresponsible and stupid.

Neither the American political machine (regardless of your chosen brand) nor Democracy is God –  Jesus is. He cares for the poor and the outcast, and He’s shaking His head at you right now.

Thanks to @seanpalmer for bringing this to my attention.

Saved, Sanctified, & Sent – Daytona Outreach Center

My friend Warren Baldwin sent me an email this morning referring me to a post made by a Daytona, FL social worker named Russell Holloway.

Ever hear of the Daytona Outreach Center? I hadn’t before this morning, but the story of Ray Kelley – the DOC’s evangelist – reminds me of my own; especially his “God, if you’re real” prayer. I prayed the same exact words at one point in my life when drug addiction and lonliness had driven me to contemplate suicide. What happened afterword is what led to my becoming a Christian.

Anyway, check this out:

That’s a great video – God is working through His people in Daytona, and I love hearing stories like this!

The DOC reminds me a lot of River City Ministry.

The world needs more ministries like this. They have Jesus written all over them! 🙂

123 Baptisms, 158 Restorations at River City Ministry in 2009

I just received the year end report from Anthony Wood – the evangelist for River City Ministry.

I’ve written about River City several times before having spent a good part of my growing up years being influenced by this ministry. My dad, Jim Woodell, currently serves as the Executive Director there, and my brother-in-law filled that position before him.

River City Ministry is a mission to North Little Rock, AR’s, poor and homeless population with facilities located in a pretty rough part of town.

Free groceries, shelter, clothing, showers, toiletries, medical services, prescriptions, eye and dental care, daily meals, and a host of other services are provided by the good people at River City.

But there’s one more thing: they also have a full-time evangelist on staff whose sole purpose is to share Jesus with those coming there for other services.

River City is a great example of a ministry concerned with social justice that is making an eternal impact on the individuals being served – not simply providing them with temporal care. Other ministries like this that aren’t experiencing these types of results might think about studying River City to see what you could do differently.

From Anthony’s email:

Friends I wanted to send you this list, as I have on occasion of those immersed and restored. As 2009 comes to an end, we all rejoice that because Jesus was lifted up daily by all who serve with River City Ministry, 120 were immersed into Christ and 158 were restored back to their first love.

I am so thankful to serve with a team of dedicated servants who glorify God in every way as they serve those whom society seems to forget. Please take a few minutes to pray each by name that the faithfulness, security, hope and love of God will richly indwell them.

Here’s hoping you all have a wonderful, rich, and restful holiday season.

Blessings,
Anthony Wood, Evangelist
