A Tremendously Blown Opportunity to Work with Francis Chan

Confession time: I serve in church leadership, and I want people to like me.

Do you?

Because that can actually be a dangerous combination.

No, I don’t mean that church leaders should aspire to be jerks (though some wouldn’t have to try very hard), nor do I mean that a desire to be liked is inherently sinful – wanting to be loved by your congregation is quite natural and one shouldn’t feel guilty about that.

I simply mean that a desire for the approval of men can easily turn into an idol if we’re not careful, because it can keep us from doing God’s will when it’s socially or relationally uncomfortable. Continue reading

Reaching the Missing Generation @ #pbl12

The Pepperdine Bible Lectures are right around the corner.

Airiel and I will be teaching a class Thursday May 3 at 3:15PM in Keck Science Center 130 (map) entitled “Reaching the Missing Generation: Practical Evangelistic Ministry to Twenty-Somethings”. We’re finishing up our prep this week and are looking forward to being in Malibu next.

In our class we will share observations made regarding common characteristics among a few of the most evangelistically effective 20-something ministries in the United States. Data from national studies performed through Campus Ministry United will inform our content in addition to our own experience in evangelistic 20-something ministries both as students and leaders.

I believe this is going to be a good class, and encourage anyone interested in learning how to better make disciples of young people to attend.

Who will be in Malibu next week?

Elisha’s Double Portion & God-Centered Ambition

New sermon up from 2 Kings 2.

We’re in the midst of a transitional period at the Lake Merced Church of Christ, and just happened to be dealing with Elisha in our sermon series this past week.

Last Sunday I preached the story of Elijah’s passing the torch to Elisha, and the relevance this story has in our lives and in the life of the Lake Merced Church today.
